IMPORTANT 8/21/17 SOLAR ECLIPSE ANNOUNCEMENT FROM PRINCIPAL RICHARD FINLAYSON:
Dear Friends,

As many of you may know, our area will be experiencing a rare solar eclipse on Monday, August 21. At our campus, the maximum impact will be approximately an 88% blockage of the sun and will occur at approximately 2:43 PM. Therefore, we have made the decision to delay our end of school for exactly
one hour so that our stude ... Continue nts and teachers will be able to experience this outstanding educational opportunity. This will mean that our elementary pickup will be at 3:20, secondary students will be released at 3:30 and our busses will leave at 3:35. This is not a decision that is made lightly, but we feel strongly that the potential educational benefits are well worth the inconvenience that may be caused.

There are some eye safety issues that go along with a solar eclipse. The most important guideline to ensure safe viewing is that no one should ever attempt to view the sun with the naked eye. Therefore, we have ordered glasses approved by NASA for our students to wear while they view this event. We will stress with our students that they should only look toward the sun while wearing these and we ask that you emphasize this with them at home, too. In order to ensure the safety of all of our students for this event, we will be implementing the following plan according to grade level. Our prekindergarten through 2nd grade students will remain in their classrooms for this event and view the eclipse via news reports. Our students in grades 3 – 12 will go to the football field at the end of the normal school day for our Great American Solar Eclipse Event where we will spend time viewing the eclipse during the maximum impact. You are certainly welcome to join us for this opportunity. However, we will not have enough viewing glasses for parents who attend.

If you would prefer that your child not view the eclipse, would prefer to make other plans to view it as a family, or have any concerns for your child’s safety; you are welcome to pick your child up at any point in the school day. We do ask that if you plan to do this that you depart with your child by 2:15 while our students will all still be in their classes. This will allow us to implement our plan with limited distractions.

We are very excited about this unique opportunity that we will be able to experience as a school family. Again, our end of day departure schedule will be delayed for exactly one hour on Monday, August 21. We appreciate your understanding of this decision. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact us.

We are excited about the awesome start to our school year. Thank you for entrusting your precious children into our care. They are indeed a blessing to us. As always, thank you for your continued prayers and support.

In Christ,
Richard E. Finlayson
Principal
